    Upwelling occurs when the wind causes the ocean water to move. When the water moves away from the coastline and causes the water underneath the surface to come up to the surface this is upwelling. This is an important process because the water that comes from beneath the surface is nutrient rich.

    Downwelling occurs when winds cause water to move towards the coastline. The water on the surface of the oceans ends up moving downwards.
